Conventional Radiography Testing (RT): Time-Tested Accuracy in Industrial Inspection
What is Conventional Radiography Testing?
Conventional Radiography Testing (RT) is a widely practiced non-destructive testing (NDT) method that uses X-rays or gamma rays to detect internal flaws in materials, welds, and structures. It has been a cornerstone of industrial inspection for decades due to its reliability, clarity, and compliance with various international standards.
At Inspection Technic, we provide certified and precise conventional RT services, serving sectors like oil & gas, refineries, power plants, pipelines, fabrication yards, and heavy industries across India and Africa.
How It Works
In conventional RT, a radiation source (such as Iridium-192 or X-ray) is placed on one side of the test object, and radiographic film is placed on the opposite side. The radiation passes through the material and exposes the film, producing an image that reveals internal discontinuities such as:
- Cracks
- Porosity
- Lack of fusion
- Slag inclusion
- Corrosion or wall thinning
✅ Benefits of Conventional Radiography Testing
Despite the rise of digital technologies, conventional RT remains highly effective, especially for:
Thick and complex weld inspections
Permanent records with physical film
Highly detailed defect detection
Widespread acceptance in industry codes
Cost-effective for small to medium-sized projects
🏗️ Applications Across Industries
Inspection Technic has used conventional RT across multiple high-stakes projects:
Pipeline girth weld inspections
Pressure vessel and heat exchanger quality control
Tank shell and nozzle weld inspections
Castings, forgings, and structural steelwork
Revamp and turnaround QA/QC
